Jonah (Yûnus)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

1A. L. R. These are the verses of the book of wisdom.

2It is a matter of wonderment to men that We have set Our inspiration to a man from among themselves? That he should warn mankind and give the good news to the believers, that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of truth. The unbelievers say, “This is indeed an evident sorcerer.”

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

1Alif Lam Ra tilka ayatul kitabil hakimi.

2Akana li nasi ajaban an auhaina ila rajulin minhum an anuzirin nasa wa bashshiri lazina amanu anna lahum qadama siduqin inda rabbihim qalal kafiruna inna haza lasahirun mubinun.

[Commentary continues below.]

3 Verily, your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days and is firmly established on the throne, regulating and governing all things. No intercessor except after His permission hath been obtained. This is Allah your Lord, Him therefore serve. Will you not celebrate His praises?

4To Him will be your return. The promise of Allah is true and sure. It is He who begins the process of creation and repeats it, that He may reward with justice those who believe and work righteousness, but those who reject Him will have nothing but draughts of boiling fluids and a grievous penalty, because they did reject Him.

5It is He who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light, and measured out stages for her, that you might know the number of years and the count. Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. Thus does He explain his signs in detail for those who understand.

3Inna rabbakumullahul lazi khalaqa samawati walarda fi sittati ayyamin summa sutawa alal arushi yudabbirul amra ma min shafiin illa min badi izunihi zalikumullahu rabbukum fabuduhu afala tazakkaruna.

[Commentary continues below.]

6Verily, in the alternation of the night and the day, and in all that Allah has created, in the heavens and the earth, are signs for those who fear Him.

7Those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present, and those who heed not Our signs.

8Their abode is the fire because of what they earned.

9Those who believe and work righteousness, their Lord will guide them because of their faith, beneath them will flow rivers in gardens of bliss.

6Inna fi khutila fi laili wa nahari wa ma khalaqallahu fi samawati walardi la ayati liqaumin yattaquna.

[Commentary continues below.]

10Their cry therein will be, “Glory to you, O Allah.” and “Peace” will be their greeting therein. And the close of their cry will be, “Praise be to Allah the cherisher of the worlds.”

11And if Allah were to hasten for men the ill, as they would fain hasten on the good, then would their respite be settled at once. But We leave those who rest not their hope of their meeting with Us in their trespasses wandering in distraction to and fro.

12And when trouble touches a man he cries unto Us, lying down on his side or sitting or standing. But when We have solved his trouble, he passes on his way as if he had never cried to Us for a trouble that touched him. Thus do the deeds of transgressors seem fair in their eyes.

10Dawahum fiha subhanakallahumma wa tahiyyatuhum fiha salamun wa akhiru dawahum anil hamdu lillahi rabbil alamina.

11Wa lau yuajjilullahu li nasi sharra sutijalahum bil khairi laqudiya ilaihim ajaluhum fa nazaru lazina la yarujuna liqaana fi tuguyanihim yamahuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

13And We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong, their apostles came to them with clear signs but they would not believe. Thus do We requite those who sin.

14Then We made you heirs in the land after them to see how you would behave.

15And when Our clear signs are rehearsed unto them, those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us say, “Bring us a reading other than this or change this.” Say, “It is not for me of my own accord to change it, I follow naught but what is revealed unto me, if I were to disobey my Lord I should myself fear the penalty of a great day.”

13Wa laqadu ahlakunal quruna min qabulikum lamma tualamu wa jaathum rusuluhum bil bayyinati wa ma kanu liyuminu kazalika najuzil qaumal mujurimina.

[Commentary continues below.]

16Say, “If Allah had so willed I should not have rehearsed it to you nor would He have made it known to you. A whole lifetime before this have I tarried among you: will you not then understand?”

17Who does more wrong than such as forge a lie against Allah, or deny His signs? But never will those who sin prosper.

18And they serve besides Allah things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say, “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say, “Do you indeed inform Allah of something He knows not in the heavens or on earth? Glory to Him, and far is He above the partners they ascribe.”

16Qulu lau shaallahu ma talautuhu alaikum wa la adurakum bihi faqadu labistu fikum umuran min qablihi afala taqiluna.

17Fa man attulamu mimman ifutara alallahi kaziban au kazzaba bi ayatihi innahu la yufulihul mujurimuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

19And mankind was but one nation but differed later. Had it not been for a word that went forth before from your Lord, their differences would have been settled between them.1

20And they say, “Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord?” Say, “The unseen is only for Allah. Then wait, I too will wait with you.”

21And when We make mankind taste of some mercy after adversity has touched them. Behold, they take to plotting against our signs. Say, “Swifter to plan is Allah.” Verily, Our messengers record all the plots that you make.

19Wa ma kana nasu illa ummata wahidatan fakhutalafu wa lau la kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laqudiya bainahum fima fihi yakhutalifuna.

20Wa yaquluna lau la unzila alaihi ayatun min rabbihi faqulu innamal gaibu lillahi fanutattiru inni maakum minal muntattirina.

21Wa iza azaquna nasa rahmatan min badi darraa massathum iza lahum makurun fi ayatina qulillahu asurau makuran inna rusulana yakutubuna ma tamkuruna.

1. Indeed mankind was one nation till after the flood, when mankind decided to use her unity against God by purposing to build a tower (the tower of Babel) whose height will reach God in the heavens so that they do not scatter on all of the face of the earth. That would have been in rebellion against God who wanted mankind to replenish the whole earth. As a consequence of this rebellion, man’s language which had hitherto been one was confounded and therefore God’s purpose was eventually accomplished. The story is recorded in Genesis 11:1‑9.

[Commentary continues below.]

22He it is who enables you to traverse through land and sea, so that you even board ships, they sail with them, with a favorable wind and they rejoice thereat, then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides and they think they are being overwhelmed, they cry unto Allah sincerely offering duty unto Him saying, “If You do deliver us from this we shall truly show our gratitude.”

23But when He delivers them, behold, they transgress insolently through the earth in defiance of right. O mankind, your insolence is against your own souls, an enjoyment of the life of the present, in the end to Us is your return and We shall show you the truth of all that you did.

22Huwa lazi yusayyirukum fil barri wal bahri hatta iza kuntum fil fuluki wa jaraina bihim bi rihin tayyibati wa farihu biha jaatha rihun asifun wa jaahumul mauju min kulli makani wa tuannu annahum uhita bihim daawullaha mukhulisina lahud dina lain anjaitana min hazihi lanakunanna minash shakirina.

[Commentary continues below.]

24The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies, by its mingling arises the produce of the earth which provides food for men and animals, till the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out, the people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it, there reaches it Our command by night or by day and We make it like a harvest clean mown as if it had not flourished only the day before. Thus do We explain the signs in detail for those who reflect.

25And Allah does call to the home of peace, He does guide whom He pleases to a way that is straight.

24Innama masalul hayati dunya ka main anzalnahu mina samai fa khtalata bihi nabatulardi mimma yakulu nasu wal anamu hatta iza akhazatilardu zukhrufaha wazzayyanatu wa tuanna ahluha annahum qadiruna alaiha ataha amuruna lailan au naharan fa jaalunaha hasidan ka allam taguna bil amusi kazalika nufassilul ayati li qaumi yatafakkaruna.

25Wallahu yadu illa dari salami wa yahdi ma yashau illa sirati mustaqimin.

[Commentary continues below.]

26To those who do right is a goodly reward yea more than in measure. No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces. They are companions of the garden, they will abide therein.

27And those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil, ignominy will cover them, no defender will they have from Allah, their faces will be covered as it were with pieces from the depth of the darkness of night, they are companions of the fire: they will abide therein.

28And one day shall We gather them all together. Then shall We say to those who joined gods, “To your place, you and those you joined as partners.” We shall separate them, and their partners shall say, “It was not us that you worshiped.”2

26Lillazina ahsanul husuna wa ziyadahtun wa la yaruhaqu wujuhahum qataru wa la zillatun ulaika assuhabul jannati hum fiha khaliduna.

27Wallazina kasabu sayyiati jazau sayyiatin bi misuliha wa taruhaquhum zillahtun ma lahum minallahi min assimin ka annama ugusyiyatu wujuhuhum qituaan minal laili muzuliman ulaika assuhabu nari hum fiha khaliduna.

28Wa yauma nahshuruhum jamian summa naqulu lillazina ashuraku makanakum antum wa shurakaukum fa zayyaluna bainahum wa qala shurakauhum ma kuntum iyyana tabuduna.

2. This is likened to the story told by Jesus in reference to the last day when some will come expecting to go to heaven but will be ordered to go to hell because their works are evil. Luke 3:27: But he will tell you, 'I don't know where you come from. Get away from me, all you evildoers!'

[Commentary continues below.]

29Enough is Allah for a witness between us and you, we certainly knew nothing of your worship of us.

30There will every soul prove the deeds it sent before, they will be brought back to Allah their rightful Lord, and their invented falsehoods will leave them in the lurch.

31Say, “Who is it that sustains you from the sky and from the earth? Or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? And who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?” They will soon say, “Allah.” Say, “Will you not then show piety?”3

32Such is Allah your real cherisher, apart from truth what remains but error? How then are you turned away?

29Fakafa billahi shahidan bainana wa bainakum inkunna an ibadatikum lagafilina.

32Fa zalikumullahu rabbukumul haqqu fa maza badal haqqi illa dalalu fa anna tusurafuna.

3. This verse does not make any exception but says the miracle of restoration of sight and of hearing, restoring the dead to life and providing for the needs of mankind are the works of God. We know that Jesus did all these miracles in His ministry, as such and according to this that makes Him God, so also does it qualify the over a million people from all walks of life who are able to perform such miracles. However, it is a factor also that the mere performance of a miracle does not make one a true deity because Satan does give pseudo power to his agents to perform such miracles to confuse and deceive the world. The deity of Jesus was established in Qur’an 3, however, we shall revisit it in Qur’an 19 as well.

[Commentary continues below.]

33Thus is the word of your Lord proved true against those who rebel, verily, they will not believe.

34Say, “Of your partners, can any originate creation and repeat it?” Say, “It is Allah who originates creation and repeats it, then how are you deluded away?”4

35Say, “Of your partners, is there any that can give any guidance towards truth?” Say, “It is Allah who gives guidance towards truth. Is then He who gives guidance to truth more worthy to be followed or he who finds not guidance unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you? How do you judge?”

36And most of them follow nothing but fancy, truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily, Allah is well aware of all that they do.

33Kazalika haqqatu kalimatu rabbika alla lazina fasaqu annahum la yuminuna.

34Qulu hal min shurakaikum man yabdaul khalqa summa yuiduhu qulillahu yabdaul khaluqa summa yuiduhu fa anna tufakuna.

4. Please refer to notes on Qur’an 3:49.

[Commentary continues below.]

37And this Qur’an is not such as can be produced by other than Allah, on the contrary it is a confirmation of what went before it and a fuller explanation of the book wherein there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds.

38Or do they say, “He forged it?” Say, “Bring then a chapter like unto it and call anyone you can besides Allah, if you speak the truth.”

39No, they charge with falsehood that whose knowledge they cannot compass even before the elucidation thereof has reached them, thus did those before them make charges of falsehood, but see what was the end of those who did wrong.

37Wa ma kana hazal quranu anyufutara min dunillahi wa lakin tasudiqal lazi baina yadaihi wa tafusilal kitabi la raiba fihi mi rabbil alamina.

39Bal kazzabu bima lam yuhitu bi ilmihi wa lamma yatihim tawiluhu kazalika kazzabal lazina min qablihim fanuzuru kaifa kana aqibatuz tualimina.

[Commentary continues below.]

40And of them there are some who believe therein and some who do not, and your Lord knows best those who are out for mischief.

41And if they charge you with falsehood, say, “My work to me and yours to you. You are free from responsibility for what I do and I for what you do.”

42And among them are some who listen to you, but you cannot make the deaf to hear even though they are without understanding?

43And among them are some who look at you, but you cannot guide the blind even though they will not see?

44Verily, Allah will not deal unjustly with man in anything, it is man that wrongs his own soul.

40Wa minhum ma yuminu bihi wa minhum mal la yuminu bihi wa rabbuka alamu bil mufusidina.

44Innallaha la yattlimun nasa shaian wa lakinnan nasa anfusahum yattlimuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

45And one day He will gather them together, as if they had tarried but an hour of a day, they will recognize each other, assuredly those will be lost who denied the meeting with Allah and refused to receive true guidance.

46And whether We show you some part of what We promise them or We take your soul, in any case to Us is their return, ultimately Allah is witness to all that they do.

47And to every people was sent an apostle, when their apostle comes, the matter will be judged between them with justice and they will not be wronged.

48They say, “When will this promise come to pass if you speak the truth?”

49Say, “I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except as Allah wills. To every people is a term appointed, when their term is reached not an hour can they cause delay, nor can they advance.”

45Wa yauma yahshuruhum ka allam yalbasu illa saata mina nahari yataarafuna bainahum qadu khasiral lazina kazzabu bi liqaillahi wa ma kanu muhutadina.

49Qul la amuliku li nafsi darran wa la nafan illa ma shaallahu li kulli ummatin ajalun iza jaaajaluhum fala yastakhiruna saatan wa la yastaqdimuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

50Say, “Do you see if his punishment should come to you by night or by day, what portion of it would the sinners wish to hasten?”

51Would you then believe in it, at last when it actually cometh to pass? Ah, now? And you wanted to hasten it on.

52At length will be said to the wrongdoers, “Taste the enduring punishment. You get but the recompense of what you earned.”

53And they seek to be informed by you, “Is that true?” Say, “Aye, by my Lord. It is the very truth, and you cannot frustrate it.”

50Qulu araaitum in atakum azabuhu bayatan au naharan maza yastajilu minhul mujrimuna.

53Wa yasutambiunaka ahaqqun huwa quli wa rabbi innaha lahaqqun wa ma antum bi mujizina.

[Commentary continues below.]

54And every soul that has sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, would fain give it in ransom, they would declare repentance when they see the penalty, but the judgment between them will be with justice and no wrong will be done unto them.

55Is it not that to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth? Is it not that Allah’s promise is assuredly true? Yet most of them understand not.

56Is it He who gives life and who takes it, and to Him shall you all be brought back.

57O mankind, there has come to you a direction from your Lord, and a healing for what is in your hearts, and for those who believe a guidance and a mercy.

58Say, “In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy in that let them rejoice.” That is better than what they hoard.

54Wa lau anna li kulli nafusin tualamatu ma filardi laftadatu bihi wa asarrun nadamata lamma raawul azaba wa qudiya bainahum bil qisti wa hum la yuttlamuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

59Say, “Do you see what things Allah has sent down to you for sustenance? Yet you hold forbidden some things thereof and lawful.” Say, “Has Allah indeed permitted you, or do you invent things to attribute to Allah?”

60And what think those who invent lies against Allah of the day of judgment? Verily, Allah is full of bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.

59Qul araaitum ma anzalallahu lakum mi rizuqin fa jaaltum minhu haraman wa halalan qul allahu azina lakum am alallahi tafutaruna.

[Commentary continues below.]

61And in whatever business you may be, and whatever portion you may be reciting from the Qur’an, and whatever deed you may be doing, We are witnesses thereof when you are deeply engrossed therein. Nor is hidden from your Lord the weight of an atom on the earth or in heaven. And not the least and not the greatest of these things but are recorded in a clear record.

62Behold, verily, on the friends of Allah there is no fear nor shall they grieve.

63Those who believe and guard against evil.

64For them are glad tidings in the life of the present and in the hereafter, no change can there be in the Words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme felicity.5

65And let not their speech grieve you, for all power and honor belong to Allah, it is He who hears and knows all things.

5. The Qur’an here says that there can be no change in the word of Allah, however, a cursory look at the Qur’an reveals several changes in the words of Allah to contradict this verse. Here are a few examples;

FACT: The Qur’an teaches the Muslims that the Jews and the pagans are their enemies, however, the Christians are their friends 5:82. In 5:5, the Muslims are encouraged to marry from among the Jews who are said to be their enemies along with the Christians.

However, in the Qur’an 5:51, the Muslims are commanded not to befriend the Christians and the Jews and that whoever does so is of them, consequently an enemy of Islam. Any way you look at it, it has been altered twice. Yet the Qur’an says that, that cannot be in the word of Allah.

FACT: The Qur’an says that, it does not matter as to where one faces in prayer, but that it is right to be righteous 2:177, we see this changed to facing Jerusalem and then from Jerusalem to Mecca 2:142‑150. This first change was made because Muhammad was seeking to court the Jews.

The Muslims were told to face Jerusalem in their prayer, but

when the Jews would not turn to Islam, in his anger Muhammad claimed that Allah wants them to face the Mosque which was the modified pagan shrine in Mecca. Allah has once again violated his holy word. He has altered his position twice.

FACT: The Qur’an teaches that there shall be no compulsion in religion 2:256, although the Qur’an commands the Muslims to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah and your enemies 8:60. They have also been charged to slay the pagans 9:5 and to pursue the Jews and the Christians till they all submit to the Authority of Islam 9:29. This has either been changed or amended three times. Therefore, the greeting of peace with which the Muslims salute others with in the strictest sense should only be to fellow Muslims.

FACT: The law of inheritance has been changed from equal share for both male and female descendants of the deceased Qur’an 4:7 to the male descendant receiving twice the share of the female, 4:11,176. From reading these passages it seems to convey this ideal that Allah either cannot make up his mind or he suffers from short attention disorder. Allah has changed the contents of the Qur’an many times to cause anyone reading this verse to question Allah claim to not changing his word.

66Behold, verily, to Allah belong all creatures in the heavens and on earth. What do they follow who worship as His partners other than Allah? They follow nothing but fancy and they do nothing but lie.

67. He it is that has made you the night that you may rest therein, and the day to make things visible. Verily, in this are signs for those who listen.

68They say, “Allah has begotten a son.” Glory be to Him. He is self sufficient. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. No warrant have you for this. Do you say about Allah what you know not?

69Say, “Those who invent a lie against Allah will never prosper.”

66Alla inna lillahi man fi samawati waman filardi wa ma yatabiul lazina yaduna min dunillahi shurakaa inyatabiuna illa tuanna wa in hum illa yakhurusuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

70A little enjoyment in this world, and then they will return to Us. Then We shall make them taste the severest penalty for their blasphemies.

71Relate to them the story of Noah. Behold, he said to his people, “O my people, if it be hard on you that I should stay and commemorate the signs of Allah, yet I put my trust in Allah. Then get an agreement about your plan and among your partners, so your plan be not to you dark and dubious. Then pass your sentence on me and give me no respite.”6

72“But if you turn back, no reward have I asked of you, my reward is only due from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to Allah’s will.”

6. Muhammad is told to relate the story of Noah to his people, however there is nothing but a fictitious claim to an account which never happened.

[Commentary continues below.]

73They rejected him but We delivered him and those with him in the Ark, and We made them inherit the earth while We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. Then see what was the end of those who were warned.

74Then after him We sent apostles to their peoples, they brought them clear signs but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.

75Then after them sent We Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs. But they were arrogant, they were a people in sin.

76When the truth did come to them from Us they said, “This is indeed evident sorcery.”

77Moses said, “Do you say this about the truth when it has reached you in sorcery like this? But sorcerers will not prosper.”

78They said, “Have you come to us to turn us a way from the ways We found our fathers following, in order that you and your brother may have greatness in the land? But we shall not believe in you.”

79And Pharaoh said, “Bring me every sorcerer well versed.”

80When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them, “Throw what you wish to throw.”

81When they had their throw, Moses said, “What you have brought is sorcery, Allah will surely make it of no effect, for Allah prospers not the work of those who make mischief.”

82“And Allah by His words does prove and establish his truth however much the sinners may hate it.”

83But none believed in Moses except some children of his people, because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, lest they should persecute them, and certainly Pharaoh was mighty on the earth and one who transgressed all bounds.

84And Moses said, “O my people, if you believe in Allah, then in Him put your trust, if you submit to His will.”

85They said, “In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord, make us not a trial for those who practice oppression.”

86“And deliver us by your mercy from those who reject You.”

87And We inspired Moses and his brother with this message, “Provide dwellings for your people in Egypt, make your dwellings into places of worship, and establish regular prayers, and give glad tidings to those who believe.”

88And Moses said, “Our Lord, You have indeed bestowed on Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the life of the present, and so our Lord, they mislead men from your path. Deface, our Lord the features of their wealth and send hardness to their hearts, so they will not believe until they see the grievous penalty.”

89Allah said, “Your prayer is accepted. So stand straight and follow not the path of those who know not.”

90And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length when overwhelmed with the flood, he said, “I believe that there is no god except Him whom the Children of Israel believe in: I am of those who submit.”7

91Ah now, but a little while before you were in rebellion, and you did mischief.

92“This day shall We save you in your body, that you may be a sign to those who come after you. But verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our signs.”

7. When Pharaoh and his people were overwhelmed by the flood they had no chance for a prayer let alone a confession and an acceptance of faith. The story is in Exodus 14:18‑31. In any case, even if they accepted faith it would not have been Islam, which was born over a thousand years after this fact.

[Commentary continues below.]

93We settled the Children of Israel in a beautiful dwelling place and provided for them sustenance of the best. It was after knowledge had been granted to them that they fell into schisms. Verily, Allah will judge between them as to the schisms among them on the day of judgment.8

94If you were in doubt as to what We have revealed unto you, then ask those who have been reading the book from before you. The truth has indeed come to you from your Lord, so be in nowise of those in doubt.9

95And be not of those who reject the signs of Allah, or you shall be of those who perish.

96Those against whom the word of your Lord has been verified would not believe.

93Wa laqadu bawwana bani Israila mubawwaa sidqi wa razaqunahum mina tayyibati famakhtalafu hata jaahumul ilmu inna rabbaka yaqdi bainahum yaumal qiyamati fima kanu fihi yakhtalifuna.

95Wa la takunanna mina lazina kazzabu bi ayatillahi fa takuna minal khasirina.

96Inna lazina haqqat alaihim kalimatu rabbika la yuminuna.

8. What schisms is Allah referring to here. Is it the division between the Northern and Southern Kingdoms? That was caused by God as a result of the sins of Solomon, when he married pagan women who caused his heart to turn from following after God. Is it the religious schisms? That was a result of the rebellion of the people to follow after God and they took for gods creations of silversmiths and goldsmiths. Later, the Maccabees, Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots and others in pursuit of religious purity came into being. Allah, unfortunately, does not give any clue as to which division this reference is about.

9. When the angel or spirit started to appear unto Muhammad, he was indeed afraid, later on he was in doubt whether the source of the revelation was God. Unfortunately, he did not consult with those who differed with him but with those who accepted him, such as Khadijah his wife and her cousin Waraqa ibn Naufal. Allah enjoins on Muhammad to counter check his revelation with those who first had the revelation before him, this is because there are savants (Learned people, monks) among

them (5:82). Furthermore, Muslims are even forbidden to argue with the people of the Book (29:46) because they were of the opinion that they believed the revelation which was sent to the people of the Book. “And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender.”

97And even if every sign was brought unto them until they see the grievous penalty.

98Why was there not a single township which believed so its faith should have profited it, except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the penalty of ignominy in the life of the present and permitted them to enjoy for a while.10

99And if it had been the Lord’s will, they would all have believed, all who are on earth. Will you then compel mankind against their will to believe.

100And no soul can believe except by the will of Allah, and He will place doubt on those who will not understand.11

97Wa lau jaathum kullu ayatin hata yarawul azabal alima.

100Wa ma kana li nafusin an tumina illa bi izunillahi wa yajalur rijusa alla lazina la yaqiluna.

10. Jonah indeed was sent to preach to te people of Nineveh, when he reluctantly began to preach, the whole town of both human and livestock repented and fasted to avert God’s judgment upon them. However, to say that they are the only township who accepted the warning of Allah through prophet Yunus (Jonah) shows a misunderstanding of Biblical language. In Biblical language all does not always denote wholeness, rather, it could be the majority as in the preaching of John the Baptist when all Judea (Matthew 3:5‑6):

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

The “all” here basically means the majority, not the exactly everybody. In this sense therefore, there are other townships whose repented en mass to the preaching of the prophets, Israel and Judah certainly did that with some of the prophets and therefore delayed God’s judgment upon them.

11. Surely there should be no compulsion in religion (2:256). However, since Muslims are commanded to pursue the pagans, the Jews and the Christians till they surrender to Islam (Qur’an 9:29), this verse is in contradiction.

101Say, “Behold all that is in the heavens and on earth,” but neither signs nor warners profit those who believe not.

102Do they then expect what happened in the days of the men who passed away before them? Say, “Wait then, for I too will wait with you.”

103In the end We deliver Our apostles and those who believe, thus is it fitting on Our part that We should deliver those who believe.

104Say, “O men! if you are in doubt as to my religion, I worship not what you worship other than Allah. But I worship Allah who will take your souls, I am commanded to be of the believers.”

105And further set your face towards religion with true piety and never in any wise be of the unbelievers.

106And call not on any other than Allah, such will neither profit you nor hurt you, if you do, behold, you shall certainly be of those who do wrong.

107And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none that can remove it but He, if He designs some benefit for you, there is none can keep back His favor, He causes it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleases. And He is the always forgiving, most merciful.12

108Say, “O men, now truth has reached you from your Lord. Those who receive guidance do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray do so to their own loss, and I am not over you to arrange your affairs.”

12. This speaks to the doctrine of fatalism in Islam. If you were created for heaven or hell, you could not change that even if you wanted to. Your fate is sealed.

109And follow the inspiration sent unto you and be patient and constant till Allah decides, for He is the best to decide.

109Wa tabiu ma yuha ilaika wasubiru hata yahukumallahu wa huwa khairul hakimina
