The Bee (An-Nahl)

In the name of Allah, Gracious, Merciful.

1Inevitable is the command of Allah, seek you not then to hasten it, glory to Him and far is He above having the partners they ascribe unto Him.

2He does send down His angels with inspiration of His command to such of His servants as He pleases. “Warn that there is no Allah but I, so do your duty unto Me.”

3He has created the heavens and the earth for just ends, far is He above having the partners they ascribe to Him.1

4He has created man from a sperm drop, and behold this same becomes an open disputer.2

5And cattle He has created for you men, from them you derive warmth and numerous benefits and of their meat you eat.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

1Ata amurullahi fala tasutajiluhu subuhanahu wa taala amma yushurikuna.

2Yunazzilul malaikata bi ruhi min amurihi alla ma yashau min ibadihi an anuziru annahu lailaha illa anna fattaquni.

1. This is a refutation primarily of the Deity of Christ and subsequently of the Holy Spirit who are members of the Godhead in Christian Theology. Being members of the Godhead, they share in the Divine attributes, character, essence, power etc. To this end therefore, they are seen in Islamic Theology as partners of Allah, which according to the Muslim is blasphemous.

2. The doctrine of man is very intriguing, in that we are not so sure, reading the Qur’an, as to the actual origin of man. This verse and 75:37 says that man was created from a sperm drop. Qur’an 11:61 says man is a product of the earth (what is does not say is what particle of the earth man came from). Meanwhile Qur’an 19:67 says that man was created from nothing. Are we to believe that man was created from nothing, the very fact that the verb is used means that it has to have come out of something. There can be no creation without an initial element.

Even when something is called into being, it has to have an element, in that case the element of creation becomes the word.

Qur’an 3:59 uses dust as the element from which we were created, whereas 15:26 says sounding clay and mud are the sources of man’s origin.

So with all the confusion found in the Qur’an, the Bible has a clearer answer to the question of creation. In Genesis 1:27 we read, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” How was man created? Genesis 2:7 explains that “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Considering all that man consists of, David exclaimed in Psalm 139:14: I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. There is no ambiguity whatsoever.

6And you have a sense of pride and beauty in them as you drive them home in the evening and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning.

7And they carry your heavy loads to lands that you could not reach except with souls distressed, for your Lord is indeed most kind, most merciful.

8And horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and use for show, and He has created things of what you have no knowledge.

9And unto Allah leads straight the way but there are ways that turn aside, if Allah had willed He could have guided all of you.

10It is He who sends down rain from the sky, from it you drink and out of it grows the vegetation on which you feed your cattle.

6Wa lakum fiha jamalun hina turihuna wa hina tasurahuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

11 With it He produces for you corn, olives date, palms, grapes, and every kind of fruit: verily, in this is a sign for those who give thought.

12And He has made subject to you the night and the day, the sun and the moon, and the stars are in subjection by His command, verily, in this are signs for men who are wise.3

13And the things on this earth which He has multiplied in varying colors, verily, in this is a sign for men who celebrate the praises of Allah.

3. The Bible does say that God gave man dominion over His creation, but that does not include the Sun, the Moon and the Stars. Genesis 1:26-31:

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Things in subjection to us are terrestrial and not celestial. Celestial bodies are subject only to God.

14And it is He who has made the sea subject that you may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that you may extract therefrom ornaments to wear, and you see the ships therein that plough the waves that you may seek of the bounty of Allah and that you may be grateful.

15And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should shake with you, and rivers and roads, that you may guide yourselves.

16And marks and signposts, and by the stars guide themselves.

17Is then He who creates like one that creates not? Will you not receive admonition?

18And if you would count up the favors of Allah, never would you be able to number them, for Allah is always forgiving, most merciful.

19And Allah does know what you conceal and what you reveal.

20And those whom they invoke besides Allah create nothing and are themselves created.

14Wa huwa lazi sakharal bahura litakulu minhu lahuman tuariyyan wa tasutakhuriju minhu hiluyatan talubasunaha wa taral fuluka mawakhira fihi wa litabutagu min fadulihi wa laallakum tashukuruna.

[Commentary continues below.]

21They are things dead, lifeless, nor do they know when they will be raised up.

22Your Allah is one Allah, as to those who believe not in the hereafter, their hearts refuse to know and they are arrogant.

23Undoubtedly Allah does know what they conceal and what they reveal, verily, He loves not the arrogant.

24And when it is said to them, “What is it that your Lord has revealed?” They say “Tales of the ancients.”

25Let them bear on the day of judgment their own burdens in full and also of the burdens of those without knowledge whom they misled. Alas how grievous the burdens they will bear.

21Amuwatun gairu ahuyain wa ma yashuruna ayyana yubasuna.

[Commentary continues below.]

26Those before them also plotted against Allah’s way, but Allah took their structures from their foundations and the roof fell down on them from above, and the wrath seized them from directions they did not perceive.4

27Then on the day of judgment He will cover them with shame and say, “Where are my partners concerning whom you used to dispute?” Those endued with knowledge will say, “This day indeed are the unbelievers covered with shame and misery.”

28“Those whose lives the angels take in a state of wrongdoing to their own souls. Then they would offer submission. We did no evil.” “No, but verily, Allah knows all that you did.”

4. There are two Biblical accounts which this may refer to:

a). The collapse of the Tower of Babel on the rebellious unbelievers. They were of Cushite origin, descendants of Ham and consequently, Canaanites from whom Muhammad descended since Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar married from the Canaanites.

b). The Philistines of the time of Samson, when the later after being punished by the Philistines went to their Temple and pulled it down as his last revenge. The Philistines are also of Canaanite origin.

Other than these two incidents, I know not of any. This could also symbolize the unbelievers who openly persecute the people of God in hopes of gaining some advantage over them in the presence of others.

[Commentary continues below.]

29“So enter the gates of hell to dwell therein. Thus evil indeed is the abode of the arrogant.”

30And to the righteous it is said, “What is it that your Lord has revealed?” They say, “All that is good.” To those who do good there is good in this world and the home of the hereafter is even better. And excellent indeed is the home of the righteous.

31Gardens of eternity which they will enter, beneath them flow rivers, they will have therein all that they wish, thus does Allah reward the righteous.

32Those whose lives the angels take in a state of purity, saying, “Peace be on you, enter the garden because of the good which you did.”5

29Fadukhulu abuwaba jahannama khalidina fiha fa labisa masuwal mutakabirina.

32Allazina tatawaffahumul malaikatu tayyibina yaquluna salamun alaikum udukhulul jannata bima kuntum tamaluna yajuzillahul mutaqina.

5. On account of our works shall no one be saved. Because the Qur’an is emphatic that whoever commits an evil deed, the same shall be cast face down into the fire (Qur’an 6:120, 27:90). The Bible says that salvation is the gift of God and not of ourselves that we should boast (Ephesians 2:8-10). Isaiah makes it clearer that our righteousness is like filthy rags; Isaiah 64:6; But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. If that is not satisfactory enough then there is a Book of remembrance before God in which are recorded the names of those who will be making it to heaven, whoever does not find their name in there will be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone (Revelation 20:10-15).

[Commentary continues below.]

33Do they wait until the angels come to them or there comes the command of your Lord? So did those who went before them. But Allah wronged them not, no, they wronged their own souls.

34But the evil results of their deeds overtook them and that very thing at which they had scoffed hemmed them in.

35And the worshipers of false gods say, “If Allah had so willed, we should not have worshiped anything but Him, neither we nor our fathers nor should we have prescribed prohibitions other than His.” So did those who went before them. But what is the mission of apostles but to preach the clear message?

[Commentary continues below.]

36And for We assuredly sent among every people an apostle. “Serve Allah and avoid evil.” Of the people were some whom Allah guided and some on whom error became inevitable. So travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who denied the truth.

37If you are anxious for their guidance yet Allah guides not such as He leaves to stray and there is none to help them.

38And they swear their strongest oaths by Allah, that Allah will not raise up those who die. No, but it is a promise on Him in truth, but most among mankind realize it not.

36man haqqat alaihi dualalahtu fa siru fil arddi fanuzuru kaifa kana aqibatul mukazzibina Wa laqadu baasuna fi kulli ummatin rasulan an ibudullaha wa jutanibutu tuaguta fa minhum man hadallahu wa minhum.

[Commentary continues below.]

39In order that He may manifest to them the truth of that wherein they differ and that the rejecters of truth may realize that they had indeed falsehood.

40For to anything which We have willed We but say the word, “Be” and it is.

41And to those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah after suffering oppression We will assuredly give a goodly home in this world, but truly the reward of the hereafter will be greater if they only realize.

42Those who persevere in patience and put their trust on their Lord.

43And before you also the apostles We sent were but men to whom We granted inspiration, if you realize this not, ask those who possess the message.

[Commentary continues below.]

44We sent them with clear signs and books of dark prophecies, and We have sent down unto you the message, that you may explain clearly to men what is sent for them and that they may give thought.

45Do then those who devise evil feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up, or that the wrath will not seize them from directions they little perceive?

46Or that He may not call them to account in the midst of their goings to and fro without a chance of their frustrating Him?

47Or that He may not call them to account by a process of slow wastage, for your Lord is indeed full of kindness and mercy.

48Do they not look at Allah’s creation among things, how their shadows turn round from the right and the left prostrating themselves to Allah, and that in the humblest manner?

[Commentary continues below.]

49And to Allah does obeisance all that is in the heavens and on earth whether moving creatures or the angels, for none are arrogant.6

50They all revere their Lord high above them and they do all that they are commanded.7

51And Allah has said, “Take not two gods, for He is just one Allah, then fear Me.”8

52And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth and to Him is duty due always, then will you fear other than Allah?

53And you have no good thing but is from Allah: and moreover when you are touched by distress unto Him you cry with groans.

6. Allah has spoken presumptuously in that the Qur’an says “And to Allah doth obeisance all that is in the heavens and on earth, whether moving (living) creatures or the angels: for none are arrogant (before their Lord,” There are a number of people here on earth who do not bow their wills to Allah and that is a hard fact. We also know from both the Qur’an and the Bible that Satan (Iblis) does not bow his will to Allah (Qur’an 15:29-33, Isaiah 14:12-15). So to say that all things do obeisance to Allah is not only misleading but an outright lie.

7. Other living things like trees, plants, and animals, fish and the water, non-human creatures do do obeisance to Allah without question. But humans with will powers exercise them against the glory and will of God.

8. Most cultures of the world believe in two supreme deities, a good god and an evil god. It is against such as was the practice of pre-Islamic Arabians that this verse may be directed. There are some so called Christians who have the same philosophy.

Choosing the New Testament God above the Old Testament God. To such, let this be a reminder that God is One, besides Him there is none. In the decalogue of Moses, one of the first things that God commanded the Jews was this:

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. "You shall have no other gods before me. "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. (Exodus 20:1-7)

54Yet when He removes the distress from you, behold! some of you turn to other gods to join with their Lord.

55To show their ingratitude for the favors We have bestowed on them! Then enjoy; but soon will you know your folly!

56And they assign to things they do not know, a portion out of that which we have bestowed for their sustenance! By Allah you shall certainly be called to account for your false inventions.

57And they assign daughters for Allah! Glory be to Him! and for themselves they desire!

58And when news is brought to one of them of a female, his face darkens and he is filled with inward grief!9

54Summa iza kashafa ddurra anukum iza fariqun minkum bi rabbihim yushurikuna.

55Liyakufuru bima atainahum fa tamatau fa saufa talamuna.

56Wa yajaluna lima la yalamuna nassiban mimma razaqunahum tallahi latusalunna amma kuntum tafutaruna.

57Wa yajaluna lillahil banati subuhanahu wa lahum ma yashutahuna.

58Wa iza bushira ahaduhum bil unusa tualla wajuhuhu musuwaddan wa huwa kattimun.

9. Here was a culture who like their contemporaries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, were boy child crazy. Some fathers even considered it an insult to have a girl child and would often burry the baby alive. Yet, they assigned daughters to Allah, the most supreme and self sufficient Allah, who had no need for a son or a daughter. The obsession with the boy child stemmed from their need to raise warriors who would fight in their family feuds; whereas a boy promised a strong heritage, a girl they reasoned would cause the family’s downfall. With such little regard for girls and very strongly against God having a Son, He could have a daughter.

[Commentary continues below.]

59With shame does he hide himself from his people because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain it on contempt or bury it in the dust? Ah! what an evil they decide on!

60To those who believe not in the hereafter applies the similitude of evil: to Allah applies the highest similitude: for He is the exalted in power, full of wisdom.

61And if Allah were to punish men for their wrongdoing He would not leave on the earth a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated term: when their term expires they would not be able to delay for a single hour just as they would not be able to anticipate it.

62And they attribute to Allah what they hate, and their tongues assert the falsehood that all good things are for themselves: without doubt, for them is the fire and they will be the first to be hastened on into it!

59Yatawara minal qaumi min sui ma bushira bihi ayumusikuhu alla hunin am yadusuhu fiturabi alla saa ma yahukumuna.

63By Allah We sent our apostles to peoples before you, but Satan made their own acts seem alluring, he is also their patron today but they shall have a most grievous penalty.

64And We sent down the book to you for the express purpose that you should make clear to them those things in which they differ and that it should be a guide and a mercy to those who believe.

65And Allah sends down rain from the skies and gives therewith life to the earth after its death: verily, in this is a sign for those who listen.

66And verily, in cattle will you find an instructive sign. From what is within their bodies between excretions and blood We produce for your drink milk, pure and agreeable to those who drink it.

67And from the fruit of the date palm and the vine you get out wholesome drink and food: behold in this also is a sign for those who are wise.

68And your Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in habitations;

69Then to eat of all the produce and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colors wherein is healing for men: verily, in this is a sign for those who give thought.

[Commentary continues below.]

70And it is Allah who creates you and takes your souls at death; and of you there are some who are sent back to a feeble age so that they know nothing after having known much: for Allah is all knowing, all powerful.

71And Allah has bestowed His gifts of sustenance more freely on some of you than on others; those more favored are not going to throw back their gifts to those whom their right hands possess so as to be equal in that respect. Will they then deny the favors of Allah?

72And Allah has made for you mates of your own nature. And made for you out of them sons and daughters and grandchildren, and provided for you sustenance of the best: will they then believe in vain things and be ungrateful for Allah’s favors?

70Wallahu khalaqakum summa yatawaffakum wa minkum ma yuradu illa aruzalil umuri likaila yalama bada ilumin shaiaan innallaha alimun qadirun.

[Commentary continues below.]

73And worship others than Allah such as have no power of providing them for sustenance with anything in heavens or earth and cannot possibly have such power?

74Invent not similitudes for Allah: for Allah knows and you know not.

75Allah sets forth the parable, a slave under the dominion of another; he has no power of any sort; and a man on whom We have bestowed goodly favors from ourselves and he spends thereof privately and publicly: are the two equal? Praise be to Allah. But most of them understand not.

73Wa yabuduna min dunillahi ma la yamuliku lahum rizuqan mina samawati walarddi shaian wa la yasutattiuna.

76Allah sets forth (another) Parable of two men: one of them dumb, with no power of any sort; a wearisome burden is he to his master; whichever way be directs him, he brings no good: is such a man equal with one who commands Justice, and is on a Straight Way?

77And to Allah belongs the mystery of the heavens and the earth. And the decision of the hour is as the twinkling of an eye, or even quicker: for Allah has power over all things.

78And it is Allah who brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when you knew nothing; and He gave you hearing and sight and intelligence and affections, that you may give thanks.

79Do they not look at the birds held poised in the midst of the sky? Nothing holds them up but Allah. Verily, in this are signs for those who believe.

80And it is Allah who made your habitations homes of rest and quiet for you; and made for you out of the skins of animals dwellings which you find so light when you travel and when you stop, and out of their wool and their soft fibers and their hair, rich stuff and articles of convenience for a time.

81And it is Allah who made out of the things He created some things to give you shade; of the hills He made some for your shelter; He made you garments to protect you from heat and coats of mail to protect you from your violence. Thus does He complete his favors on you that you may bow to His will.

82But if they turn away your duty is only to preach the clear message.

83They recognize the favors of Allah; then they deny them; and most of them are ungrateful.

84And one day We shall raise from all peoples a witness: then will no excuse be accepted from unbelievers, nor will they receive any favors.10

85And when the wrongdoers see the penalty, then will it in no way be mitigated nor will they then receive respite.

86And when those who gave partners to Allah will see their partners they will say: “Our Lord! these are our partners, those whom we used to invoke besides You.” But they will throw back their word at them. “Indeed you are liars!”11

87And that day shall they show submission to Allah; and all their inventions shall leave them in the lurch.

10. The Bible says that the Gospel should be preached as a witness to all mankind before the end comes. Matthew 24:14: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” The Qur’an here mentions that Allah will raise from all people a witness to silence the unbelievers on the day of judgment. Well, God is raising those witnesses even now, the question for the unbeliever is, would he recognize God’s witness before it is too late?

11. In the economy of Allah, no god would be able to defend their followers except he. If Allah had been God, this would have been true, but we know that Allah cannot be God because of the glaring and misleading information that has been in the Qur’an. Please refer to footnotes 9 and 10 under Qur’an chapter 13, footnote 1 under chapter 15, and footnote 2 under this Sura 16.

[Commentary continues below.]

88Those who reject Allah and hinder men from the path of Allah, for them will We add penalty to penalty; for that they used to spread mischief.

89And one day We shall raise from all peoples a witness against them from among themselves, and We shall bring you as a witness against them, and We have sent down to you the book explaining all things, a guide and a mercy and glad tidings to Muslims.

90Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you that you may receive admonition.

91And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have entered into it, and break not your oaths after you have confirmed them; indeed you have made Allah your surety; for Allah knows all that you do.

92And be not like a woman who breaks into untwisted strands the yarn which she has spun after it has become strong. Nor take your oaths to practice deception between yourselves, lest one party should be more numerous than another: for Allah will test you by this; and on the day of judgment He will certainly make clear to you that wherein you disagree.

93And if Allah so willed He could make you all one people, but He leaves straying whom He pleases and He guides whom He pleases, but you shall certainly be called to account for all your actions.

94And take not your oaths to practice deception between yourselves with the result that someone’s foot may slip after it was firmly planted, and you may have to taste the evil of having hindered men from the path of Allah and a mighty wrath descend on you.

95And sell not the covenant of Allah for a miserable price: for with Allah is a prize far better for you if you only knew.

96What is with you must vanish: what is with Allah will endure. And We will certainly bestow on those who patiently persevere, their reward according to the best of their actions.

97Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily, to him will We give a new life, a life that is good and pure, and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.

98When you read the Qur’an, seek Allah’s protection from Satan, the rejected one.

99No authority has he over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.

100His authority is only over those who take him as patron and who join partners with Allah.

101And when We substitute one revelation for another, and Allah knows best what He reveals, they say “You are a forger”: But most of them understand not.12

12. Yusuf Ali believing that Muhammad is the seal of all prophets seeks to defend the Qur’an, Muhammad and Islam with this footnote:

“The doctrine of progressive revelation from age to age and time to time does not mean that Allah’s fundamental Law changes. It is not fair to charge a Prophet of Allah with forgery because the Message as revealed to him is in a different form from that revealed before, when the core of the Truth is the same, for it comes from Allah.”

He is conceding that the contents of the Bible and the Qur’an are not the same. He also understands why the contents of the Qur’an would be deemed forgery. He calls for fairness in the discharge of our duty as theologians because he believes the core of the truth is the same. As should be obvious to you, the message of the Qur’an is very different from that of the Bible even in basic Judeo and Christian doctrines.

God is substituted for Allah, the Deity of Jesus is rejected, His historical death on the cross is not accepted by the Allah of the Qur’an. So, how can the core of the truth be the same, I ask?

102Say, the Holy Spirit has brought the revelation from your Lord in truth, in order to strengthen those who believe and as a guide and glad tidings to Muslims.13

103And we know indeed that they say “It is a man that teaches him.” The tongue of him they wickedly point to is notable foreign while this is Arabic pure and clear.14

104Those who believe not in the signs of Allah, Allah will not guide them, and theirs will be a grievous penalty.

105It is those who believe not in the signs of Allah that forge falsehood: it is they who lie!

13. The Holy Spirit in Islam theology is synonymous with the Angel Gabriel.

14. Could Muhammad had forged the message of the Qur’an? Possibly, he was aware of the some of the Old Testament stories from Jews who lived in Mecca and Medina and also from his travels in his youth. Could someone had taught him? Quite possibly as well, Waraqa ibn Naufal, Khadijah’s cousin was a monk who helped confirm Muhammad as a prophet, he could have taught Muhammad easily. The reason against any of the above allegations is the claim that Allah none with a perfect command of the Arabic language knew enough of the message to teach it to him. Foreigners, however knew of the message and could have taught it to him.

[Commentary continues below.]

106Anyone who after accepting faith in Allah utters unbelief except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in faith, but such as open their breast to unbelief on them is wrath from Allah and theirs will be a dreadful penalty.

107This is because they love the life of this world better than the hereafter: and Allah will not guide those who reject faith.

108Those are they whose hearts, ears, and eyes, Allah has sealed up and they take no heed.

109Without doubt, in the hereafter they will perish.

110But verily, your Lord to those who leave their homes after trials and persecutions and who thereafter strive and fight for the faith and patiently persevere your Lord after all this is always forgiving, most merciful.

111One day every soul will come up struggling for itself and every soul will be recompensed for all its actions and none will be unjustly dealt with.

112And Allah sets forth a parable: a city enjoying security and quiet abundantly supplied with sustenance from every place: yet was it ungrateful for the favors of Allah: so Allah made it taste of hunger and terror, like a garment, because of that which they wrought.

110Summa inna rabbaka lillazina hajaru min baadi ma futinu summa jahadu wa sabaru inna rabbaka min baadiha lagafurun rahimun.

[Commentary continues below.]

113And there came to them an apostle from among themselves but they falsely rejected him; so the wrath seized them even in the midst of their iniquities.

114So eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favors of Allah, if it is He whom you serve.

115He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any food over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity without willful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is always forgiving, most merciful.

116And say not for any false thing that your tongues may put forth “This is lawful and this is forbidden” so as to ascribe false things to Allah. For those who ascribe false things to Allah will never prosper.

117It is a paltry profit, but they will have a most grievous penalty.

118And to the Jews We prohibited such things as We have mentioned to you before: We did them no wrong but they were used to doing wrong to themselves.

119But verily, your Lord to those who do wrong in ignorance but who thereafter repent and make amends, your Lord after all this is always forgiving, most merciful.

120Abraham was indeed a model devoutly obedient to Allah, true in faith and he joined not gods with Allah:

121He showed his gratitude for the favors of Allah who chose him and guided him to a straight way.

122And We gave him good in this world and he will be in the hereafter in the ranks of the righteous.

123So We have taught you the inspired message “Follow the ways of Abraham, the true in faith and he joined not gods with Allah.”

124The Sabbath was only made to those who disagreed; but Allah will judge between them on the day of judgment as to their differences.15

125Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for your Lord knows best who have strayed from His path and who receive guidance.

122Wa atainahu fidunuya hasanatan wa innahu filakhirati lamina sualihina.

125Uduu illa sabili rabbika bil hikumati wal mau ituatil hasanati wa jadiluhum bilati hiya ahusanu inna rabbaka huwa alamu biman duala an sabilihi wa huwa alamu bil muhutadina

15. The Sabbath is an institution of God for the benefit of mankind. God rested on the seventh day after creating the world in six days. Exodus 20:8-11:

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

This is in essence the meaning and origin of the Sabbath. Contrary to Muslim opinion, it is not a ‘Mosesistic’ institution. Rather, it is after a divine order, to the glory of the Lord and for the benefit of mankind. It is a holy (hallowed, sanctified) day, in absolute devotion to God is enjoined. Just as in the month of Ramaddan Muslim devote them-

selves to Allah, once in a year, the Jews were to devote themselves to God once in a week. This notwithstanding, devotion to God is a daily affair. To the statement that “the Sabbath was only made strict to those who disagreed...” the Bible records no such thing.

126And if you catch them out, catch them out no worse than they catch you out: but if you show patience, that is indeed the best for those who are patient.

127And be patient, for your patience is from Allah; nor grieve over them: and distress not yourself because of their plots.

128For Allah is with those who restrain themselves and those who do good.

126Wa in aqabutum fa aqibu bimisuli ma uqibutum bihi wa lain suabirutum lahuwa khairul lisabirina.

127Wa ssubiru wa ma saburuka illa billahi wa la tahuzan alaihim wa la taku fi daiqin mimma yamukuruna.
